One of Ukraine's most prosperous cities, Donetsk, after 11 years under Russian occupation, has become a destitute, degrading place where bottled water explodes, housing is prohibitively expensive, and wages are on par with the poorest regions of Asia. Even Russian military propagandists are no longer able to hide the catastrophe: the "Russian world" has turned out to be a regime of lies, extortion, and rotting infrastructure. The interview with the Russian propagandist attracted the attention of journalist and blogger Denis Kazansky.
War correspondent and famous propagandist Dmitry Steshin admitted in an interview: Donetsk, once a major industrial center and pride of Eastern Ukraine, was destroyed not by war, but by Russia itself. Housing is more expensive than in Moscow. Salaries are miserable and often not paid. Prices in supermarkets are exorbitant, and the quality of life is worse than in post-Soviet slums.
"Milk, bread, a bottle of water and a check at the cash register for over 10 thousand rubles," Steshin himself complains. At the same time, technical water flows from the tap, and bottled water ferments and explodes. The promised water pipeline from the Rostov region has not been built - the money was stolen, as the occupation "authorities" themselves admit. Donetsk is left without water, without prospects and with promises that are repeated for years and not fulfilled.
Local residents live by the laws of the late USSR: they buy food "while there is some", because tomorrow it will be more expensive or there will be nothing at all. There are no discounts, as they say in the city: "What, these serfs also get discounts?" This is not a joke, this is a reality brought by Russia to one of the most successful Ukrainian cities.
The real reason for the catastrophic prices is the extortion of entrepreneurs by the occupation administration. The Russian system in Donetsk is a mixture of outright robbery, fake promises and systemic theft. Everything that was previously perceived as basic amenities (clean water, stable utilities, fair prices) has now become a luxury. Donetsk flourished under Ukraine and could not believe that it would face such poverty and nightmare. Locals can hardly imagine that this could have happened before. Could anyone in 2014 imagine that 11 years later Russia would turn a flourishing city into a languishing regional center on the level of a Russian province.
Where are the new pipes? Where are the restored communications? Where are the working water mains? The answer is in the reports that do not exist. The answer is in the faces of people who buy rotten water at the price of wine. Donetsk has become a symbol of everything that the "Russian world" brings with it: degradation, lies, endless extortion and complete contempt for people. Ukrainian journalist Denis Kazansky rightly noted: "Nobody attacked these people. They could have simply not invaded Ukraine and would have lived a calm, peaceful life, but they chose war, and now they are whining ." And what is happening in Donetsk today is not a side effect, it is the essence of the Russian occupation.
