Office Hours longtime friend Nick Jushchyshyn and his students at Drexel University unveil their cutting-edge LED volume wall on May 15th show. This wall is designed not just for immersive filmmaking but with the cinematographer in mind. Built around a 20x10 ft AOTO LED display with an ultra-fine 1.5mm pixel pitch, this wall delivers rich blacks and seamless visuals thanks to light-absorbing casings and ultra-low moiré behavior.
Every panel is genlocked to an Evertz 5601 system, ensuring frame-perfect sync between LED refresh and shutter timing—essential for avoiding ghosting or temporal drift. The wall's backbone is powered by Brompton's SX40 processor, distributing UHD video across 72 modular panels via 5x 20-amp 120V circuits.
And for you camera aficionados: motion tracking is achieved through a Vicon mocap system sampling at 120fps, with real-time camera tracking data streamed over a dedicated 10GbE network to the Unreal Engine render box. The studio’s “Sputnik” crown rig—a DIY constellation of reflective markers mounted on zinc bolts—sits atop the dolly cam for spatial awareness, while scene calibration is perfected using false color imaging and light meters.
