As promised in the third segment of “Prospecting a Pastel Fluorite Pegmatite,” this video shows the discovery of the larger pocket on the same pegmatite. The project took shape as a collaboration with an adept Colorado prospector, Travis Pearson, and his kids who proved to have eagle eyes in spotting float crystals. Even though we had already discovered the location of the kilometer-long pegmatite, it required much attention to detail to target the largest pocketing zone. This video shows how to arrive at that pocketing zone, explains how the quality of crystals are influenced by their crystallization history, and theorizes the morphology of the pegmatite based on local geologic features.
Due to the length, I have created a separate five minute video to show a smaller pocket that Travis discovered along the very same pegmatite (closer to the fluorite pocket). The link can be found below. I hope that everyone may learn something new from our multi-day project spent in uncharted South Platte territory.
