The Galata Tower, or Galata Kulesi, is a prominent medieval structure located in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district. Originally constructed in 1348 by the Genoese as the Christea Turris (Tower of Christ), it served as the tallest building in the city at that time.
Over the centuries, the tower has played various roles, including functioning as a watchtower, prison, and fire lookout. Notably, in 1638, Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi is said to have launched an early flight attempt from its roof, gliding across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar—a tale recounted by the Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi.
Today, the Galata Tower operates as a museum and exhibition space, offering visitors panoramic 360-degree views of Istanbul from its observation deck. It stands approximately 63 meters tall, with walls about 3.75 meters thick, and has become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
The tower is open daily from 8:30 am to 11:00 pm, with an entrance fee of 650 Turkish liras (about $24). Given its popularity, especially during sunset, it’s advisable to plan your visit accordingly.
