Ali Ashabi was arrested in Arkansas on October 18, 2023, after Trooper Ana Escamilla stopped him for a traffic violation on I-40 and discovered over $311,000 worth of illegal, untaxed cigarettes in his cargo van. He was charged with possession of untaxed tobacco and unauthorized use of property to facilitate a crime and was taken to the Lonoke County detention center. The incident resulted in the largest seizure of contraband cigarettes in Arkansas history.
Update on the case:
In April 2024, Ashabi entered a negotiated plea, was convicted of a Class A misdemeanor, and was sentenced to 12 months of probation. He was also ordered to pay more than $37,000 in fines and restitution.
Court documents are attached and show the plea agreement and also indicate that the Mercedes Sprinter Van was released from State Seizure and returned to the Suspect.
