Step-Daughter, Ballerina Had Rocky Relationship Prior to Father’s Death

Ashley Benefield testified about her relationship with Doug’s Benefield's daughter, Eva Benefield. Ashley revealed she made Eva a shadow box as a gift, but Eva then added a rose to it from her deceased mother, which caused some controversy in the home. Ashley testified that she and Doug argued several times about Eva.

In September 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Ashley Benefield made bail and has been living with family and her daughter since the crime.
