Topic: Petroleum in Collision Zones: Cases from Banggai and Buton, Eastern Sulawesi
Speaker: Awang Harun Satyana (Independent Geologist, Retired SKK Migas)
Abstract: Indonesia was formed by collision of Gondwanan terranes from the early Mesozoic to the Neogene time from west to east. Terrane collision and post-collision tectonics therefore, are elemental in the geology of Indonesia.
In petroleum point of view, collision and post-collision tectonics play significant roles for basin formation, configuration, and the resultant petroleum system. In collision, pre-collision structure and stratigraphy are reconfigured by the way of subsiding or uplifting them forming foreland basin. Continuing collision forms fold and thrust belts, providing structural traps. Subsidence of pre-collision source rocks, buried beneath multiple thrust sheets and molassic deposits eroded from collisional orogens generate petroleum from the source rocks. Migrated petroleum charge pre- and syn-collision traps.
Petroleum plays in collision zones are unique and need good understanding of collision and post-collision tectonic history. Proven petroleum accumulation in collisional basins of Banggai and Buton, Eastern Sulawesi provide cases and lessons.
