Ortaköy, one of Istanbul’s most charming and popular neighborhoods, lies right on the European shore of the Bosphorus. In Byzantine times it was known as Ayios Fokas, and later became “Ortaköy,” meaning “the middle village.” Over centuries, Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived here side by side, giving the area its rich multicultural identity.

The district’s most iconic landmark is the Ortaköy Mosque, officially called the Büyük Mecidiye Mosque, commissioned by Sultan Abdulmejid I between 1854 and 1856. Its neo-Baroque architecture, unique position by the water, and the backdrop of the Bosphorus make it one of the unforgettable symbols of Istanbul.

But Ortaköy is not only about its mosque. The lively square is full of cafés, restaurants, and street vendors serving famous local bites such as kumpir (baked potatoes stuffed with endless toppings) and colorful waffles. The energy of the square, combined with the aromas of street food, makes Ortaköy a must-visit for both locals and tourists.
