Captain & Tennille ~ You Never Done It Like That 1978 Disco Purrfection Version

Toni Tennille was co writer of a musical that was moving to southern California. She needed a new keyboardist and found one in Daryl Dragon, who was playing for the Beach Boys. Then, he suggested Toni be allowed to fill the spot for an additional keyboardist, and Toni became the only female to be a "Beach Girl". After the tour ended, they began performing at a popular Encino restaurant and doing demos for a local studio. The owner offered them studio time to pay them back, and the couple recorded two songs, "The Way I Want To Touch You" and the Beach Boys "Disney Girls". They pressed 500 copies of "The Way I Want To Touch You" and released it on their own Butterscotch Castle Label and it began to pick up momentum on the local radio stations. When the labels came knocking, Toni and Daryl chose A&M because it was the only label that would let them produce themselves, and felt comfortable with labelmates like The Carpenters. One more upbeat song was needed to complete the album, something that would show off Daryl's keyboard prowess. Kip Cohen of A&M's A&R department asked them to listen to a track off of Neil Sedaka's " Sedaka's Back" LP, "Love Will Keep Us Together". They were entranced by the song and spent two weeks coming up with a new arrangement. The label loved the finished song and released it as their debut single. It spent four weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 and is the only #1 hit to have been on the charts at the same time by the same artist in two different languages, english and spanish. Several years later, they realized that A&M was moving in a new direction with artists being signed like The Police and Joe Jackson. They agreed to sign with Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records. "Do That To Me One More Time" hit #1 in February of 1980.
