Fort Bragg was originally named after Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general during the Civil War.
According to the Department of Defense, some Army bases were named after Confederate officers to earn support from local populations in the South during the height of Jim Crow Laws. In 2021, Congress established a commission to rename the bases in the National Defense Authorization Act. And in 2023 Fort Bragg was renamed Fort Liberty.
In early February of 2025, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum declaring the Army would rename the post from Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg. This time, renaming Fort Bragg for Roland Bragg who during the Battle of the Bulge, drove a stolen German ambulance 20 miles to get a wounded solider to an Allied Forces hospital in Belgium. Roland Bragg was awarded a Purple Heart, and a Silver Star for his actions.
Family members of Bragg will be attending the resignation ceremony that will be hosted by Lt. Gen. Greg Anderson, Commanding General of XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, with Command Sgt. Maj. Bryan Barker, Command Sgt. Maj. of XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg.
