Renée Fleming and Schagidullin sing Il Pirata Duet RARE LIVE (2002) Bellini

One of my favourite parts of Il Pirata, this recording of the glorious duet between Imogene and Ernesto appears for the first time on youtube. In the first section we get one of Bellini's astonishing pieces of melancholy lyricism, with those long wilting phrase and incredibly beautiful harmonies. Many times however this section goes for nothing. Fleming really makes it into a highlight of the whole opera - no one else even approaches the level of melancholy that is invested here, and the legato, resonance and support are all of exceptional quality. She starts the aria with an impossible level of difficulty - after the dramatic phrase of defiance "Io l'amo, è vero", she diminuendos and in one breath sings the connected phrase "Ma qual s'ama un uom sepolto", having already been singing for 10 seconds. In the aria those unexpected upward glides and falling scales are to die for. After this gorgeous solo, comes the duet proper "Ah! lo veggo" (1:55) which is here also beautifully sung. In the following dramatic exchange starting "Che rechi" (5:28) Fleming does a hugely forceful Ab4 in chest voice! (6:20) Hard to imagine the same voice produced those gentle sounds just moments before. In the fast section of the duet (6:32) "Ah! fuggi, spietato", Fleming shows superb support of the line from top to bottom in this thrilling and challenging heavy fioratura. Such exciting singing!

Albert Schagidullin does an excellent job as Ernesto - it is rare for baritone to have such fluent coloratura, and he is alive dramatically.

Evelino Pidò directs the orchestra with great sensitivity, rhythmic care in the fast and slow sections, and a superb sense of colour, mood and tension.
