A beautiful pontifical high mass in the open air at the Kerkrade Market last Sunday was the spiritual prelude to the 19th WMC. More than 1000 people witnessed an impressive mass during which auxiliary bishop Dr. Everard de Jong presided, with the help of pastor-deacon Steph Nevelstein. Former Church Councilor and Bishop Emeritus Frans Wiertz was also present at the service on the sun-drenched market square.
The musical entertainment was provided by a brass ensemble made up especially of Kerkrade musicians and conducted by Harrie Ries. Vocal contributions came from various Kerkrade choir singers and cantor Tjeu Zeijen, and Janine Kitzen shone with her rendition of Giulio Caccini's 'Ave Maria'.
The theme of the mass was solidarity, and on the initiative of the WMC organization a large group of Ukrainian refugees was present at the service, who were briefly addressed in their mother language by the chairman of the WMC.
After the Mass, at the invitation of the WMC, there was a pleasant brunch for those present, which was musically enlivened by the wind orchestra "Blech Mich". It was a beautiful, inspiring and pleasant Sunday at the market. A great start for everything that awaits us in the coming weeks!
