“Well, I'm very happy and excited that Zohran (Mamdani) has, I want to congratulate Zohran, congratulate his family who must be so proud, congratulate his team, but also, more importantly, congratulate the city of New York. They had a clear choice at this election. They've chosen hope over fear. They've chose unity over division. It's been, for those of us watching this from afar, an awful campaign. There's nothing wrong with debate, with scrutiny, but I think some of the campaign, there's been some anti-Muslim hatred. There has been comments made about his ethnicity and his religion, the religion of Islam. And so, I'm so pleased that New Yorkers have chosen hope over fear, unity over division.”

“It's not for me to give advice to someone like Zohran who has had an amazing year but has shown what a great politician he is but also what a great team he has. I know from my own experience as somebody who loves my city as much as Zohran loves New York, the difference you can make to your city's life by addressing the concerns people have but also fulfilling the aspirations your citizens of your city have, recognizing the similarities between London and New York. London of course the greatest city in the world, New York the second greatest city in the world. London is liberal, progressive, multicultural, but also successful, as indeed is New York. And that's why I can understand why if you're a nativist, populist politician, we have the antithesis of all you stand for. And that is why it's really important to, you know, recognize the massive achievement of Zohran winning last night, but also wishing him the best of luck going forward.”

“We know the world view (US) President Donald Trump has. We know his views, not just in relation to women and those who are from the LGBTQ+ plus community, his views when it comes to minorities, his views when it come to Muslims. I've been at the receiving end of some of the prejudice animus and vile hatred from President Donald Trump and it's heartbreaking to see Zohran and his family going through that as well, bringing up his religion, bringing up him being a Muslim. And I'm just so inspired by the positive campaign Zohran ran. But we know that if you're a progressive, if you lead a great liberal city, if that city is multicultural and multi-religious, and if you're successful, as London has been, and as New York is, that it's the antithesis of everything President Donald Trump believes in and stands for. And so look, I wish Zohran all the best and I'm hoping that New York goes from strength to strength, which will be a rejection of the dystopian view President Trump has of diverse, successful societies like London and New York.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Wednesday congratulated Zohran Mamdani on his win in New York City's mayoral election race describing his victory as a "win for hope over fear”.


“I want to congratulate Zohran, his family, and the city of New York,” Khan said.

“They had a clear choice at this election — they chose hope over fear, unity over division.”
