Dr. Jennifer Cowger is the director of mechanical circulatory support and co-director of the cardiac intensive care unit at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. In this talk, she details our history of caring for advanced heart failure patients with left ventricular assist devices and also looks at where the field must go in the future. Most poignantly, she raises the idea that LVAD therapy should be viewed as needed therapy for end-stage heart failure in the same way that hemodialysis is for end-stage renal disease. Many patients who may benefit are not being offered or considered for this form of life-prolonging therapy.
