In January 2021, a transgender student posted a Reddit post that detailed how the Ministry of Education had allegedly prevented her from receiving hormonal therapy to treat her gender dysphoria condition. In response, a group of protestors demonstrated outside the Ministry, waving placards that read “#FixSchoolsNotStudents” and “Trans students will not be erased”.
The viral post and the conversations that ensued thereafter surfaced the many issues young queer people face on a daily basis.
In a recent Universal Periodic Review submitted to the United Nations by TransgenderSG, Sayoni and the Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN), it was reported that 77.6% of openly transgender students faced negative experiences in schools. These negative experiences range from intentional misgendering, to being sent to conversion therapy to being forced to use a bathroom they felt uncomfortable or unsafe in.
VICE World News host Christopher Khor meets with the founder of The T Project, June Chua, trans students Kaeden Lim and Lune Loh to find out more the obstacles and difficulties they have to navigate.
