So when the lookout cried "ship sighted," anticipation crackled through the air.
But the shape that emerged from the November mist was… wrong. Too tall, too soft-lined. It was a passenger liner. Someone had bolted a few antique 6-inch guns to its decks. She was almost cute.
Admiral Marschall could have erased the vessel from the sea with a single salvo from his eighteen 11-inch guns, but there was no honor in that. Instead, a German searchlight blinked a merciful command: Heave to, or we fire. Surrender.
The crew on the Scharnhorst watched, waiting for the inevitable white flag. Any second now.
