Faces of Fostering: Meet Tamara

Tamara’s journey into fostering began with a simple question from a community member: would she consider caring for a five-year-old girl through the kinship program? At first, she agreed to provide weekend relief care—but after hearing the stories of three Indigenous sisters who were at risk of being separated, she felt called to do more. Since November 2024, Tamara has been fostering all three sisters full-time, ensuring they remain together.

With her own children now grown, Tamara saw fostering as a way to give back—opening her heart and home at a time when it was needed most. She views fostering as an act of reconciliation, guided by a trauma-informed and culturally grounded approach.

Tamara is deeply committed to supporting the girls in reconnecting with their Nations and identities. She believes in meeting each child where they are. Though new to fostering, she has already witnessed how transformative the experience can be—not only for the children, but for herself as well.
