Welcome to Beaumaris Castle, the greatest castle in Wales that never was. Originally built in the 13th century by James of St George (who also built Conwy Castle), it played a key role in the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr in 1403 before being recaptured by royalists a couple of years later. Catholic martyr William Davies was imprisoned in the castle before being hung, drawn and quartered in 1593. During the English Civil War the castle was held by royalists affiliated to Charles I before surrendering to parliamentarians. Most of the planned features for the castle were never built, and today Beaumaris Castle is widely regarded as one of the greatest examples of unfinished architecture in the world. The town of Beaumaris in Victoria, Australia is named after the castle.
