Grids rule the rails at the South Devon Railway Diesel Gala | 8.11.25

A short trip up to the dart valley for a full day of diesel action at the South Devon Railway 2025 Diesel Gala! Held on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November 2025, the event brought together an amazing mix of visiting and home-based locomotives on the beautiful seven-mile heritage line between Buckfastleigh and Totnes Riverside.

This year’s gala featured some very special visitors. Star attractions included two Class 56 locomotives, 56045 in BR Blue and 56103 in DCRail corporate colours, marking the first ever appearance of a Class 56 on the South Devon Railway. Also visiting from the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway was BR Class 47 No. 47715 in freshly painted RES livery, making a rare appearance on the line.

Supporting them was the SDR’s home diesel fleet, including Class 25 D7612, Class 33 33002 ‘Sea King’, and 04 shunters D2246 and D2271, all working hard across an intensive timetable, which did end up being quite late as the day went on, but still a busy timetable nonetheless.

In this video you’ll see plenty of lineside shots and station scenes from throughout the day. Expect lots of thrash, atmosphere, and great views through the scenic Dart Valley. I’ve also included some behind-the-scenes clips from Buckfastleigh showing the locos up close.
