The action takes place in one of the Volga cities of pre-revolutionary Russia.
Artyom is a Volga loader. Local traders, kulaks, and bandits leave him alone, respecting his strength, but they also don't allow him to develop.
The young wife of one of the kulaks falls in love with Artyom, a handsome, powerful man, and dreams of breaking away from trade and moving to the countryside with Artyom.
Her abusive husband drives his wife to the point of her deciding to join a monastery, but when she's rejected, she drowns herself in the river.
To deal with Artyom, the kulak hires bandits, and they beat him.
The beaten Artyom, miraculously surviving, is found by the Jewish shoemaker Cain, who takes him in and nurses him back to health.
Living with Cain, Artyom eavesdrops on the conversations of the revolutionary-minded students who gather there and reads banned literature.
Once he recovers, he will become a different person, and the market, with its laws, will become too small for Artyom.
