During my trip to Duluth on the weekend of May 27th, I decided to take a little trip to chase the NSSR's Two Harbors Turn. I was pleasantly surprised to find NP 3617 acting as the power for the train. Even more so surprised to find it had a K5LA in place of its P3.
NP 3617 is an EMD SD45 built for the Northern Pacific in 1967. Its NP paint didn't last long, however, as NP was merged into Burlington Northern. 3617 got a fresh coat of BN Cascade Green, as well as being renumbered to 6417. It was later bought by the Wisconsin Central in 1987, where it operated until 2001, when it was donated to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum by Canadian National. After a lot of restoration work, 3617 was finally in running condition in 2021.
After catching it pulling in to Two Harbors, I went to grab a bite to eat while waiting for them to depart 2 hours later. I then chased it back to Duluth, where I ended my chase.
