The Skoda Kodiaq SUV is a seriously impressive all-rounder and one of the best cars on sale today. It lives up to high expectations and manages to cover all the bases by being comfortable, practical and good to drive, but also relatively affordable to buy and run, easy to live with and solidly built.
By offering a wide range of trim levels and an impressive entry price, plus a variety of punchy and smooth petrol and diesel engines, the Kodiaq should be on the shopping list of those after space and SUV style on a budget. But further up the range, it also appeals to those wanting premium levels of equipment and comfort. The option of front or four-wheel drive simply increases its appeal even further.
The Skoda Kodiaq went on sale in 2017, and proved to be a hit as soon as it arrived in dealers. That's the same story today, because there hasn't been a new arrival in the market that has made the Kodiaq any less attractive. The range has even expanded since launch, and as well as offering great value, those models at the top of the range challenge upmarket rivals for quality and luxury.
Under the skin, the Kodiaq shares its engines and running gear with a host of other models in the VW Group, as it uses the company's MQB platform. Here, MQB is enlarged to make space in the SUV, and in many ways the Kodiaq is the SUV equivalent to the Superb family car, and it shares many of that car's practical traits. The big difference between the two, though, is that the Kodiaq is available as a seven seater.
The basic model gets five seats, but a seven-seat option is offered across the rest of the range for about £850, and it's standard on top-spec models. Either way, the Kodiaq is a spacious and practical SUV, and adding the third row doesn't spoil boot space too much. Plus it gives you added versatility for carrying passengers.
There are six Kodiaq variants on sale: S, SE, SE Technology, SE L, Scout and Sportline, while the Edition model was available at launch as a fully-loaded flagship. Prices start from about £22,500 for the entry-level S model, which only comes with Skoda's 1.4 TSI 125PS turbo petrol engine. This model in SE guise sees a price jump of around £1,500, although there are more options available on it. SE Technology is the same price as SE, and is designed to sell to fleets - that means it gets more standard kit, but there are fewer options that can be added and just a single engine option - but it's also on offer to retail buyers.
At the top of the range, SE L trim is the current equivalent of Skoda's older Elegance trim, which means there's even more kit and a plush interior. At the moment, there are two top-spec versions of the Kodiaq, the Scout and Sportline. The former has an off-road focus, with plastic cladding and silver bash plates front and rear, while Sportline features a subtly sportier look, while both versions are seven-seaters as standard. There's no Laurin & Klement luxury version of the Kodiaq available at the moment, while a high-performance Kodia vRS diesel can't be ruled out, either.
Diesel power is handled by the VW Group's tried-and-tested 2.0 TDI motor in 150PS and 190PS forms. The former has 148bhp and is front-wheel drive with a six-speed manual as standard, with the option of adding 4x4 and a seven-speed DSG box. It's offered in all trims bar the Kodiaq S. The more powerful diesel has 187bhp with the DSG box and 4WD as standard. Like the 2.0 TSI,
The Kodiaq has an engine to suit every need, while it handles well for an SUV and the ride is controlled. One of the best in the class
Buyers of larger SUVs like the Kodiaq are unlikely to be too interested in how it handles bends at speed, but its reassuring to know the big Skoda offers a very good ride and handling balance on the whole. Combine that with the strong performance and decent refinement of the engines, and it’s the class benchmark overall.
On standard 18-inch wheels, with relatively tall tyres, the ride is supple, with the Kodiaq’s suspension tuning out unwanted wheel movements nicely, while keeping the body relatively stable. There’s still an underlying edge to the ride over washboard surfaces, but this calms down once the car is loaded with people and luggage. There’s a level of refinement to match the ride quality, too. While the 2.0 TDI engine is a little more vocal than some, it’s still not overly intrusive and you can use the revs before it becomes too noisy.
