So you're fishing from the bank and trying to figure out what kind of water conditions and cover you're dealing with. You can just fish around and maybe lose some lures. Use polarized glasses, but have no idea on depth. OR you can pick up an affordable mobile sonar like the @Buydeeper Start. This sonar is pretty amazing for the cost.
