STEPHEN was facing back and forth as the doctor ran some tests towards Samantha. She was bleeding, kaya abot-abot ang kabang nadarama niya kanina habang dinadala ito sa ospital. Hindi niya alam, pero may hinala na siyang buntis ang sekretarya.

Isang oras din yata ang itinagal bago lumabas ang doktor na sumuri kay Samantha, dali-dali siyang lumapit dito.

“How is she, doc?” he asked.

“Didn’t you know she was pregnant?”

“She’s pregnant?” ulit niya. Hindi makapaniwala na tama nga ang kaninang hula niya lang.

“Yes, she was about four weeks pregnant. Unfortunately, she suffered a miscarriage, most likely caused by emotional stress and overworked. Mahina din ang kapit ng bata.”

“Pregnant?” ulit niya.

Samantha was pregnant and suffered miscarriage due to emotional stress, dahil ba ’yon sa naging sagutan nilang dalawa kanina? Kung alam lang niya na buntis ito, sana ay hindi na lang siya nakipagsagutan dito. Hindi na sana ito na-stress at hindi sana ito nakunan.

“H-how’s Samantha? Okay lang ba siya? Gising na ba siya?”

“Yes, gising na siya. Ililipat lang namin siya sa isang private room at puwede mo na rin siyang bisitahin. I’m so sorry for your loss, Mr. Santiago.”

Tumango lang si Stephen. Habang hinihintay na mailipat sa isang private room si Samantha, dumiretso na muna siya sa billing station at binayaran ang hospital bills nito para sa araw na iyon. Maya-maya lang din ay pumapasok na siya sa loob ng private room ni Samantha.

“Hey,” bati niya sa sekretarya.

“Hi. Did you . . .?”

“Yes, sinabi lang sa akin ng doktor kanina. I . . . I’m so sorry, Samantha. Hindi ko sinasadyang pasamain ang loob mo kanina. I hope you can forgive me.”

“Pareho naman nating hindi alam na buntis ako. Naiintindihan ko, Stephen.”

“Let me take care of you, Sam.”

Umiling siya. “Hindi na kailangan. I already called Abigail, papunta na siya rito. Puwede ka nang umuwi. May kompanya ka pang kailangang asikasuhin at kasal na kailangang planuhin.”
