Welcome to Episode 7 of the Banff Series! This time, we venture just beyond Banff into the wild beauty of Yoho National Park, home to one of Canada’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders—Takakkaw Falls.
🌊 Takakkaw Falls: Nature’s Vertical Symphony
Derived from the Cree word “Takakkaw”, meaning “it is magnificent”, this waterfall lives up to its name. Plunging a staggering 373 meters (1,224 feet) from the Daly Glacier into the Yoho River below, it’s the second-highest waterfall in Canada, and arguably one of the most photogenic.
Quick Facts
Located in Yoho National Park, British Columbia
Fed by meltwater from the Daly Glacier
Visible rainbow effects often appear in late afternoon mist
Surrounded by alpine forests and dramatic cliffs
🗺️ Geography & History
Takakkaw Falls sits just west of the Continental Divide, in a hanging valley carved by glacial activity. The falls are fed by the Daly Glacier, part of the Waputik Icefield, and cascade into the Yoho River. The area was first protected in 1886, and Yoho National Park itself was established in 1887, making it one of Canada’s oldest parks.
🚗 How to Reach
From Lake Louise, drive west on the Trans-Canada Highway for about 50 km
Turn onto Yoho Valley Road, a scenic 15 km drive with steep switchbacks (note: large RVs not permitted)
Park at the Takakkaw Falls trailhead—a short, paved walk leads directly to the base of the falls
Closest towns: Field, BC (20 km) and Golden, BC (75 km)
🕒 Best Time to Visit
Mid-June to Early October: Yoho Valley Road opens seasonally due to snow
