In 2001, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Hayden Planetarium Director, first noted and named the phenomenon of Manhattanhenge—four days of the year when the setting Sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan’s street grid. The word was even added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in 2019. Today, Curator Jackie Faherty in the Museum's Department of Astrophysics is the official calculator of this unique interaction between sunset and cityscape. How is Manhattanhenge calculated? Is there an equivalent for sunrise or full Moon? Our two experts are your guides to this spectacular solar alignment.
