U2, Pink Floyd, David Crosby, Donald Fagen, and Fleetwood Mac, all endorsed by the Pope? People seemed to think so in February 2010 when a strange list began to circulate online. Many outlets billed it as the Catholic Church's "Top Ten List of Rock Albums". Was it actually a Top Ten list promulgated by the Vatican itself? Technically not, but it was close. An interesting footnote in the recent cultural history (and observation) of Vatican City.

The list discussing (and approving of) Classic Rock albums and others was in no way official Catholic teaching. It did not even technically come from the Vatican itself, but it did come from "inside" the Vatican. The Rock Music list was the work of two writers of the "L'Osservatore Romano". Vatican City's official newspaper that is often look towards as the "Pope's Paper" or the mouthpiece of the Catholic Church. The L'Osservatore has an interesting history with the wider world and culture that lead to it (briefly) publishing a list of music recommendations.

So why is this paper "Ufficioso" and does its opinion carry any weight? Here or in the here-after.
