In this video, I restore a hand-cranked blacksmith forge blower from Italy, built around 1940. After more than 80 years, the entire mechanism was stuck and clogged with hardened grease and old oil.
Restoration process step by step:
Completely disassembled the forge blower – everything was glued together by decades of hardened oil and grease.
Cleaned all housing parts using my xTool MetalFab 1200W laser cleaner.
Applied a traditional bluing finish to the housing and then carefully brushed the outside with steel wool to achieve an antique, rustic look.
Straightened and blued the impeller.
Restored the gears: cleaned, machined, ground, polished, and finally nickel-plated.
The most difficult part: restoring the lever and crank system. While disassembling, I accidentally destroyed a thread. This required machining a new shaft with a left-hand thread.
To fit the new part, I reworked the old crank, bored out the damaged thread, and welded in an adapter with proper left-hand threading.
The wooden handle received a new shaft and a brass bushing for smooth operation.
Now, after many hours of work, this antique forge blower is back in perfect condition and ready to be used again—or admired as a piece of blacksmithing history.
