Perched above the 61st parallel lies Alaska's largest city of Anchorage. This bustling sub-Arctic metropolis is the largest city in the Arctic regions of North America, boasting a growing population of over 300,000 people, and offering plenty of attractions and things to do. If you're travelling outside of Alaska's panhandle, you'll undoubtedly pass through this beating heart of Alaska at some point, and it's definitely worth heading out of the airport to explore the city and its stunning natural setting.
In this travel guide, I take you along to check out some of the city's most popular attractions and things to do in this northern metropolis. Beginning downtown at Resolution Park, I enjoyed unbeatable views of the Knik Arm, Cook Inlet, and the surrounding mountain peaks (on a clear day, you can even see Denali / Mount McKinley - over 130 miles away as the crow/raven flies!). From there, I take you along for a walk through downtown Anchorage, where I enjoy some amazing coffee at Kaladi Brothers Coffee, sample some Russian Samovar tea and a fireweed donut at The Kobuk (an Anchorage institution), and check out some of the city's most famous landmarks. After, I enjoy some amazing local microbrew at 49th State Brewing (widely regarded as the BEST beer in Alaska!) and enjoy a private tour of the production facility with its Master Brewer. From there, I head 10 miles outside of town to learn more about the many Native tribes of Alaska at the excellent Alaska Native Heritage Center, featuring a variety of recreated traditional indigenous dwellings. I end my perfect day in Anchorage with a sunset drive along the Seward Scenic Byway, calling at Beluga Point for some amazing mountain and ocean views.
