NZ FISH OF THE YEAR
New Zealand's Fish of the Year, a competition that aims to raise awareness of the country's marine life has just been announced. The Winner of the 2025 Fish of the year is the blobfish! Yeah, once dubbed the world's ugliest animal, this underdog, or well under-blob, has made a major comeback in New Zealand's Fish Of The Year Competition. Something that Lorna here helps co-ordinate. Fish of the Year has been running for 5 years now, and this time around, more than 5,000 people voted. And that's what The Year Of the Fish comp is all about! Shinning a light on our quirky sea life and sometimes threatened sea life. Like the endangered longfin eel, this critically endangered mudfish, or the second place Orange Roughy which is found at depths of up to 1,500 metres! Learning more about those deep sea critters like the blob fish and orange roughy that you know, you're never going to see them alive in their natural habitat, as providing a little window into their world and how important Is it is for us to look after these fragile marine and fresh water habitats so that we can have these fish for generations to come.
WEATHER
Parts of Northern Queensland have been hit by more major flooding. Almost 150 millimetres of rain fell in just three hours in Townsville this morning causing flash flooding through parts of the town. The wild weather comes after flooding last month damaged homes and forced people to evacuate. Meanwhile over in Western Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology are warning a cyclone could be forming off the northwest coast, making this one of the busiest cyclone seasons this decade.
NBL FINALS
The NBL Finals are going to a game 5 decider. In front of a sell out crowd at John Cain Arena in Melbourne, the Illawarra Hawks beat Melbourne United 80 to 71. Will Hickey top scored for the hawks with a career high 22 points after superstar Sam Froling went down with an injury in the first half. The finals series will now go to a deciding game in Illawarra on Sunday, with the winner being crowned the NBL Champion.
MIAMI OPEN
Now guess who's back on the winner's list. Aussie Nick Kyrgios is into the second round of the Miami Open, defeating American Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The win was actually Kyrgios' first ATP tour victory since 2022.
15 YEAR OLD RUNNER
Finally to Auckland, New Zealand, where this 15 year old has just written himself into the record books! Sam Ruthe has just made history becoming the youngest person to run a mile, that's roughly 1.6 kilometres, in under 4 minutes, clocking up a time of 3 minutes and 58.35 seconds.
FISH DOORBELL
First up to the Netherlands where a livestream of a river has gone viral on social media. You see, when fish pop up on camera, people can ring this virtual "fish doorbell" to let the lock keeper know it's time to open the gates so they can swim through. It's especially popular right now because at this time of year, heaps of fish are migrating for the warmer months.
TELESCOPE MILLIONS OF GALAXIES
Now to a huge photo of the universe. This is a 208 gigapixel image, made up of lots of smaller images. It's the first batch of major survey data from the European Space Agency's Euclid telescope, which is on a mission to map the universe and hopefully teach us more about dark matter, and dark energy, things we currently don't know a whole heap about.
YOUNGEST TO EXPERIENCE ZERO GRAVITY
And finally, to 8-year-old Jack from the US, who's always liked in space, and the idea of zero gravity, so his mum and dad decided to book him in for this special flight, which lets you experience short bursts of zero g. But his fun trip also earnt him a world record for the youngest person ever to experience zero gravity!
