Kunqu is one of the oldest forms of opera in China. Commonly known as the "mother of Chinese opera", it’s considered a treasure of ethnic Han culture. In recent years, its popularity has spread to other parts of the world, and in 2001 Kunqu was listed by UNESCO as a "representative work of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity".
Kunqu has undergone a long development process, which has continued into the 21st century. In recent years, some innovations have been evident on-stage. For example, there is the performance of the classic "Peony Pavilion" in a real garden. Then there's Zhang Jun's New Kunqu Concert, a modern interpretation designed to appeal to younger audiences. In fact, if you ask anyone where the most innovative ideas in Kunqu originate, they’ll point you to Zhang Jun.
