DEPORTEE - Nac Nac (S1E1)
Have you ever had a stupid idea that just manifested into one of your most beautiful experiences in life ever? Well that is what I am experiencing right now. I’ve always wanted to return to Belize and do a production, but by the time you consider talent, equipment, and all the other million intricacies that goes into film making, you get a little scared that Belize might not be able to provide what you need. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised
But this time around was different; my stupid idea started with me trying to decided on a nice “I’m in Belize photo” social media photo. Initially the thought was to visit my brother on San Pedro Island and snap a picture of me working on the beach proclaiming, “My new work from home office.” But I abandoned that idea as it was too cliche. Then I came up with the bright idea of having a local police pretend to arrest me and forcibly push me by the head into a Police vehicle as I snap a pic proclaiming, “Belize latest deportee.” Then I was like ....you know what would be extremely funny…….if I made a skit about being an unwanted deportee and post it from Belize. Now that would be funny…….well at least to me. Lol.
Immediately I contact @cyriluruwei and without hesitation it was on.
For four plus years Uruwei and I have been discussing working together. We came close last year when I was moving back to Belize to start a production company, but those plans were cast aside due to the pandemic. Now the time was upon us. I wanted to do something small on my cellphone but Uruwei wouldn’t have it. I protested, because I’m actually "working" from home, but from Belize. I don’t have time to schedule a production. “Namule, this is funny….we need to do it right” says Uruwei. Every time I try to pull away he raises the bar and pulls me closer. But I like a good challenge and the fact that I can finally get to work with my brother. If was like, Eff it! Let’s do it! Mek we get shirts brah! How bout this...how bout that......at one point I naily responded with "Houbou toh!"
In comes Patrick Peryefitte. Back in 2018 I went to Belize determine to meet Patrick. I had seen him in a Color Blind Media skit and thought he was the funniest thing in Belize ever. I think I stalked him and the Color Blind Media workplace with endless calls and emails to no avail. And then on a random night in Belize City two days before I’m schedule to depart, I asked my cousin EJ to take me to get my nightly dinner- Panades, and who would you guess was sitting their eating Panades? Yup the one and only Patrick. We had a good laugh and bonded. He’s been a real friend since then. And when I asked him to play the part of Lt Hyde, it was because I had already written the part for him. It was an effortless yes. His assistance on set was the difference between life and death. Thanks bro!
I would be remiss if I did not give a major shoutout to Jobo and Glen Garcia, who took my very basic framework of a song and perfectly encapsulated my vision. When Glen Garcia said, this sounds like a Chekkanareh beat and started playing ……I almost hit my head on the roof. And when I told him to put that drop out for the primero in the song (Not really it wasn’t my idea, it was his but I told him I was going to steal his credit so please allow me ), one again I was lit. We cut the song in two days. Amazing! I left the studio and damn near just went to the airport. Thanks fellas.
I can go on and on about the amazing cast for my little stupid idea, but the thing I am most proud of is the amount of fun we had, the product we delivered, and the vast array of talent that exist in Belize. I would later meet people like Sherone Hope, Chester Wade, DJ DZL, Rondine Greene, and many more that are just as passionate about film making as I am.
Collectively, all we want to do is tell quality Belize stories and folklore. I was humbled to learn what a vibrant and enthusiastic film community that exist in Belize. I hope that going forward we will all take a second look and support Belizean Film Makers. A year ago I was bummed out I couldn't move to Belize to start my production company. Today, I’m elated at the little part my stupid little skit can contribute to this community.
Now it is time for you to do your part:
A View would be amazing
A Like would be stupendous
A comment would be greatly appreciated
And a Share! Well that would just be the ultimate thank you to all the people that donated their time to this venture.
Not that I expect to win an Oscar anytime soon, but whenever I get the chance to thank God, my family, and especially my lovely wife Yolanda Martinez…..I must take it. So thanks babe, for putting up with a thousand crazy ideas before this one, and the next thousand to come. I love you more than cooked food.
With that said, enjoy and share!
