When the Department of Defence got in touch to see if we could experimentally electrify an all terrain vehicle, we were equal parts excited and challenged about this project that has real-world application for brave Aussie defence personnel.

The result is an innovative and world-leading e-ATV prototype, providing enhanced stealth and manoeuvrability benefits.

Featuring independent wheel drive with maximum torque from standstill via a unique and custom designed tri-motor drivetrain, the e-ATV prototype was developed to meet strict requirements, primarily reduced noise and heat signature to mitigate risk of discovery while in the field.

Individually powered wheels also enable greater manoeuvrability and an improved opportunity for moving away from threats, even if one wheel has been damaged by an improvised explosive device (IED).

HUB MOTOR TECHNOLOGY
Independent wheel drive was unachievable with current hub motor technology, so every step of this project involved bespoke assembly, including a drive system utilising latest e-mobility componentry, with the aim of improving design over time.

This enormously challenging skunkworks project has resulted in a one-of-a-kind electric vehicle that was presented to the personnel who’ll be using it at the annual Army Innovation Day.
