The energy band theory states that the allowed energy levels for electrons in a solid are not discrete, like in isolated atoms, but form continuous energy bands. These energy bands are formed by the overlapping of atomic orbitals as atoms come together to form a solid.
The energy bands in a solid are separated by forbidden energy gaps called band gaps. The two most important bands in this theory are the valence band and the conduction band:
1. Valence band: The valence band is the energy band that contains the highest energy levels occupied by electrons at absolute zero temperature. The electrons in the valence band are strongly bound to the atoms and are not available for electrical conduction. This band represents the filled electron states in a material.
2. Conduction band: The conduction band is the energy band located above the valence band. It contains vacant or loosely bound energy states. When an electron gains enough energy, typically through thermal excitation or the application of an external electric field, it can move from the valence band to the conduction band. Electrons in the conduction band are free to move throughout the material and contribute to electrical conductivity.
