Post-match press conference with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola after their 2-0 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the Carabao Cup semi final first leg.

New signing Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring early in the second half before having a second goal controversially ruled out after a long VAR check for offside interference by Erling Haaland. Deep into added time Rayan Cherki swept home a second goal to give City a clear advantage heading into the return leg at the Etihad Stadium, while Newcastle hit the woodwork and threatened through Lewis Miley, Yoane Wissa and Bruno Guimaraes but could not beat James Trafford.

Guardiola praises Semenyo’s penalty box instincts and the impact of young players like Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis, hails Bernardo Silva as a unique competitor who “knows all the rules”, and highlights the development of defenders Nathan Ake and Khusanov.

He admits Haaland is “exhausted” and says he hopes Omar Marmoush comes back soon to give him rest. Guardiola then launches into a detailed criticism of recent refereeing and VAR calls at St James’ Park and in the FA Cup final, saying he is “pretty sure Howard Webb will explain it tomorrow” but insists City’s response must always be to “be better and be better and be better” in every aspect.
