AITA for REFUSING to Quit My Job to Be My Disabled Brother’s Full-Time Caretaker?
I’m a 22-year-old woman who just landed my dream entry-level job after years of putting my life on hold to help care for my younger brother, who has Down syndrome and medical needs. I love him deeply and have been his main support since middle school — pickups, meds, meltdowns, routines, everything.
But when his day program suddenly lost funding, my parents cornered me and demanded I quit my new job to stay home and care for him full-time because “he listens to you the most.” They dismissed my career as replaceable, guilted me for wanting independence, and accused me of choosing money over family.
Now my parents and relatives are calling me selfish for refusing — even though I’ve already sacrificed years of my life. I moved out, tensions exploded, and I’m questioning everything.
