The abandoned 102 st tower on the IRT Flushing Line is one of the most important historical towers in the entire subway system. It was originally used to control a series of switches at 103 st-Corona Plaza when the line first opened in 1917. Being that 103 st-Corona Plaza was the last stop at the time, these switches allowed for trains to terminate on both Lcl tracks. After 111 st opened a few years later, the tower became obsolete and was not considered the main tower on the line anymore. During the mid to late 1940s, the switches north of the station were removed and the tower was decommissioned. This tower has stood tall for more than a century, however a fire broke out in July 2025, which resulted in the dismantling of the tower due to structural instability. RIP to the legacy of this tower and its roll it played on the line.
