In today’s episode of NewsHour Agenda with anchor Madhavdas Gopalkrishnan on Times Now's prime-time debate show, the discussion centers on the ongoing Waqf row and the violent unrest in West Bengal.
The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the situation and addressed genuine concerns surrounding the Waqf Act. The apex court remarked that protected monuments cannot later be declared Waqf properties and raised important questions about the inclusion of non-Muslims in Waqf boards — notably asking, “If a Muslim member can’t be added to a Hindu board, how can a Hindu be added to a Waqf committee?” The court also flagged several constitutional and administrative issues and called the recent violence in Bengal disturbing.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blamed the BJP for allegedly trying to tarnish the image of the state. She also held a closed-door meeting with Muslim clerics in Kolkata. In response, BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, staged protests and observed the day as Hindu Shaheed Diwas.
Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna acknowledged that while the Waqf Act has positive aspects, the court is equally concerned about its misuse. Despite this, violent protests have erupted, leaving 3 people dead, 15 security personnel injured, and over 100 houses destroyed under Mamata Banerjee's government.
A total of 73 petitions — filed by the AIMIM, TMC, and other opposition parties — have challenged the Waqf law. The Supreme Court has urged stakeholders to highlight the law's strengths, yet Mamata Banerjee appears more focused on pacifying anti-Waqf protestors rather than meeting or supporting the victims of the violence.
In her recent address, Mamata sharply criticized the BSF, BJP, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the Central Government, but notably did not condemn the violence that has rocked her state.
