(46) Water Well Build: Intense DIY Sicily Villa Project!

Ever wondered how to tackle a Sicily villa renovation, DIY terrace building or lay a circular brick water well for a Sicilian homestead? What do you think of my choice of handmade terracotta bricks so far? In this episode of Italy property investment and abandoned property restoration, I mix fresh mortar, carefully lay bricks and navigate the challenges of first-time circular bricklaying around my water well.

I start by setting up the cement mixer and collecting builders' sand before mixing small batches of mortar in the midday heat. At the rear garden terrace, I prepare the work area, soak the terracotta bricks and sweep and wet the floor before carefully laying the first circular course. Using my Stihl concrete saw, I cut a brick at the right angle to complete the full circle, then mortar it into place. After three courses, I tidy up the well, clean the mortar lines and get ready for the next stage of this Sicily villa renovation.

Later, I perform essential garden tool maintenance, replacing the fuel line on my petrol strimmer, sharpening the blade and ensuring everything is ready for future landscaping. As night falls, I feed one of the visiting stray cats and drive back through the lively streets of Mazara del Vallo, full of energy and families, before wrapping up for the day.
