1:21 PM- An overloaded power strip is to blame for heavy fire that destroyed part of the Church of the Living God at 7206 E 38th St. earlier today. Multiple calls to 911 reported smoke showing from the roof and shortly after arrival of firefighters, fire broke through the roof. Heavy fire tore through the attic space. Investigators believe the fire started at the strip in the wall and extended into the attic. No occupants were inside the building.
Two hours and 3 minutes to mark under control. About 30% of the building collapsed. No injuries. IFD Firefighters were able to salvage a 50 year old organ from the collapsed side of the structure. City of Lawrence Fire Department assisted IFD.
