The 28th Maori Battalion were active from very near the beginning of the war right through to its conclusion in Europe. A volunteer outfit, it was comprised originally of three Companies organized roughly according to geographical location - most of the men knew one another, or the small towns where their pals in the other platoons came from! They fought with distinction across North Africa and Italy, their contribution to the war effort ending after tense stand-offs with General Tito's Yugoslav partisans.
