Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohilary has slammed the protest against the Assam government's decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities, calling it a "drama" and claiming it was politically motivated. Mohilary accused groups like the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) and UPPL of misleading the public, stating the rally was held by these organizations yesterday.
The protest has turned violent, with students storming the BTC secretariat in Kokrajhar, vandalizing property and demanding withdrawal of the government's decision. The six communities in question are Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes (Adivasis). Existing tribal groups fear the move will dilute their rights, benefits, and representation.
The Assam government had approved the Group of Ministers' report recommending ST status for these communities, sparking widespread protests and unrest in the region.
