“Don’t Be A Bewitched Fool”

This passage warns believers about drifting from God’s grace and relying on self-effort. Paul confronts the Galatians for being “bewitched,” captivated by error, and forgetting the foundation of their faith. The focus is on protecting ourselves from deception by thinking rationally and biblically, and remembering that growth and empowerment come by faith—not works.
Paul raises four critical questions to expose the danger of self-reliance:


How did you receive the indwelling Holy Spirit?

By faith, not by works. The Spirit is received through believing, not earning.


Are you being perfected by self-effort or the Holy Spirit?

True growth means becoming Christlike, which only happens through the Spirit’s enabling power.


What have your past sufferings taught you?

Don’t let past pain be wasted; it reminds us of the grace that saved us.


Why is God working right now within your life?

His work flows from faith, not from striving or self-discipline.



Grace is the only way—both for salvation and for spiritual maturity. Rational, biblical thinking guards us from deception, and faith keeps us connected to God’s enabling power.
