يعتبر هذا اللحن من الألحان الفلكلورية التي جالت مناطق كثيرة في العالم بلغات ولهجات متعددة، وحمل كلمات ومعانٍ مختلفة في كل نسخة، لذلك من الصعب معرفة أصل هذا اللحن ونسبته إلى بلد بعينه. فمن خلال البحث، وُجد أن اللحن قد يكون اسكتلندياً يعود للجيش الاسكتلندي عند دخوله مدينة أُسكدار التركية في منتصف القرن ١٩، أو جزء من أوبريت أرميني تم تأليفه بعدها بسنوات في نفس القرن. وتُبيّن بعض المصادر أنه لحن بلقاني حيث حُمِّل كلمات تركية، وألبانية، وبوسنية، وصربية، وبلغارية، ومقدونية. وتم غناؤه بعدة لهجات باللغة العربية منها المصرية في أغنية (يا بنات اسكندرية)، والشامية (غزالي غزالي)، وأيضاً الفصحى كما في (يا عذولي لا تلمني) من التراث الموسيقي العراقي، و(طالما أشكو غرامي) واللتان تحملان كلمات من التراث الصوفي الإسلامي الموسيقي.

This melody is considered to be one of the folkloric melodies that have wandered different regions and countries and held many lyrical versions of different meanings. Therefore, it is challenging to determine the origin of this melody and relate it to one particular land. Research has revealed that it could be a Scottish melody composed for the Scottish army when it was heading to Üsküdar town of Turkey in the middle of the 19th century, or it was part of an Armenian operette composed few years afterwards in the same century. Some sources states that the melody is from Balqan region as it held Turkish lyrics, Albanian, Bosnian, Serbian, Bulgarian, & Macedonian. It also held in different dialects in Arabic language; Egyptian as in (Ya Banat Iskandariya - Oh girls of Alexandria), Levantine as in (Ghazali Ghazali - My Ghazelle), & in formal Arabic as in (Ya Athouli La Talumni - You who is shaming me in love, don't blame me) from the Iraqi musical folklore, & (Talama Ashkou Gharamy - I oftentimes groan of my adoration) of which both are from the Islamic Sufi musical folklore.
