Sample Preparation: A representative sample of aggregate (typically around 2 kg for larger sizes) is taken and washed to remove any fines.
Immersion: The sample is placed in a wire basket and immersed in water at a controlled temperature (usually 22-32°C).
Air Removal: To remove trapped air bubbles, the basket is lifted and dropped repeatedly.
Soaking: The basket with the aggregate remains submerged in water for 24 hours.
Weighing: The basket and aggregate are weighed while submerged in water, and then again after being surface-dried.
Oven Drying: The sample is then oven-dried to a constant weight.
Calculation: The water absorption percentage is calculated using the weights at different stages: Water absorption = [(SSD weight - Oven-dry weight) / Oven-dry weight] * 100.
