In Module 7 of Rewilding Mythology, Toko-pa Turner expands upon the history of the masculine archetype and the centrality of the hero's journey in the overculture. She asks how we can move beyond the collective possession by this hero archetype, offering Jungian insights, weaving ecology and mythology, and focusing on the story of Sophia, the embodiment of wisdom, as some potential answer.
✴︎ ABOUT THIS SESSION ✴︎
Coppicing the Hero’s Journey: Arthurian Legends, Fairytales, and Animism
Our bodies are composed of more bacterial cells than human cells. There are miles of mycelial fungi in a teaspoon of dirt. Resilient ecosystems are resilient in that they are home to many different species. While monomyths like the hero’s journey have long been popular, they are no longer suited to the moral and scientific complexity of extinction, ecocide, and climate change. Monologue will not save us. But polyphonic – multi-voiced – storytelling might open up adjacent possibilities. How can we rewild the Arthurian myths, turning a collection of monologue-ing heroes into a collaborative ecology of differences?

⤹ ABOUT THE COURSE:
For most of human history, myth was a durable mode of knowledge transmission, kept alive and resilient by the breath-laced web of communal storytelling. But the rise of empire depended on the deracination of mythologies. Just as landscapes were stolen and terraformed so were whole pantheons uprooted from their social and ecological contexts. How can we reroot, rewild, and retell? Rewilding Mythology is an eight-week multi-teacher online course, curated by Sophie Strand, featuring a pantheon of storytellers, artists, scholars, practitioners and more.
