DAY 27 : LANTERNS

Add inky embellishments and joyful colours to these little lanterns.

The perfect addition to any party, a string of pretty lanterns always makes me happy. Grab your pencils and pens, it’s time to get fancy!

As the scale of these little lanterns is quite small, I prefer to work in pencil first, sketching out my designs before committing to ink. When your inky lanterns are dry, gently erase the pencils lines and add some colour.

To create a glow effect, pick a yellowy orange colouring pencil and use a fairly firm pressure to colour the area around the outline of the lantern. I find a softer pencil works well for this - wax based pencils are particularly smooshy. As you move out and away from the lantern, ease off on the pressure, so more of the white paper shows through. The effect should be that of a gradual lightening and fading away of the yellow, almost a halo effect. This type of shading just takes practise, keep going with it!
