Urmila Sathyanarayanan | Turning point | Ratnakar to Valmiki | Bharatanatyam | Dance
Ratnakar was a notorious robber who did not hesitate to murder travellers who pass through the dense jungle he lived in.
Once Ratnakar met a sage Narada and demanded his veena from him. Narada in turn questioned him about how he would bare this mountainous sin he earned by killing and robbing. Ratnakar replied that his wife and children are there to share his papakarma. Not convinced by the reply Naradar asked Ratnakar to conform the same. When the confused Ratnakar asked his wife and children, they vehemently said no as they had their own sins to deal with.
Naradar initiated the perplexed Ratnakar in the Ramnama. But the poor Ratnakar was unable to utter the holy name of Rama. Naradar points to a tree and asks him to chant the word, Mara. As he started to chant with utmost focus compelled by the desire to free himself from the sins. The words Mara came to be Rama. Years went by and an ant hill grew around Ratnakar. Brahma pleased at the penance appeared before Ratnakar and as he emerged from the ant hill, he came to be known as Valmiki. He was instructed to write the life of Rama, the first kavya or literary work of India, Ramayana.
