Munich's 2nd Main Line
The core of the railway expansion in the Munich region:
At Munich Central Station, the second main line will run under all existing platform levels. The new S-Bahn station “München Hauptbahnhof” is being built here at a depth of 41 meters. Passengers can access this new station and all other levels quickly and conveniently via a central main entrance. This makes it easier to change between different forms of public transport.
The Munich S-Bahn transports up to 840,000 passengers every day and covers over 20 million kilometers a year. This makes it one of the largest S-Bahn systems in Germany. The main line, which opened in 1972 for the Olympic Games, is reaching its capacity limits, especially since all S-Bahn trains have to pass under Munich city center through a tunnel. In order to eliminate this bottleneck, a second main line will be built over around ten kilometers between the Laim train stations in the west and Leuchtenbergring in the east. This is intended to relieve pressure on the existing main route, offer an alternative option in the event of a disruption and at the same time enable the introduction of a new express S-Bahn system. The centerpiece is a seven-kilometer-long tunnel that connects the main station and the Ostbahnhof. Coming from Laim, the tunnel disappears underground shortly before the Donnersberger Bridge and reappears on the surface between Ostbahnhof and Leuchtenbergring. In addition to the two transfer stations Laim and Leuchtenbergring, which will be rebuilt during ongoing operations, the three new underground stations Hauptbahnhof, Marienhof and Ostbahnhof will be completely rebuilt.
