Over The Sea To Skye - MV Glenachulish
We had a family holiday in the camping coach at Stromeferry in the mid 1960s and used the ferry as foot passengers. We may also have used the Ballachulish ferry en-route to the Fort William area (before the bridge opened).
MV Glenachulish (a glen next to South Ballachuish) was built in 1969 for the Ballachulish service, and is now the only operational hand operated turntable ferry.
The local campsite, Moyle Campsite, was not taking tents (facilities closed) and the impromptu campsite at Bernera has no facilities, so I managed to find a B & B in Fort William to split up the return journey from Glasgow.
Weather forecasts were for dry but cloudy so the glorious sunshine was a very welcome bonus. The Old Military Road to Glenelg although steep over Bealach Ratagan was a lot better than other single track roads I've driven. Given the small amount of traffic coming from Skye, I took my car across after lunch for a rather rollercoaster & twisting ride over Bealach Udal to drive back over the Skye Bridge (another first for me!).
